Situated on the Dawson River, Theodore is a town in the Shire of Banana in Queensland. The Wulli Wulli people were the original inhabitants of Theodore before it was first settled by Joseph Thompson. The building of a dam at The Gorge of the Dawson River created 100,000 acres of fertile land, and the support of Ted Theodore, Premier of Queensland, for the irrigation scheme led to the town being named after him in his honour. Before that, Theodore had been known as Castle Creek, named after the railway station that was itself named after a creek that flowed into the Dawson River. The town’s main industry is coal mining.
Tourists can visit Theodore’s library on The Boulevard, which is operated by the Shire of Banana. They may also get a dose of history when visiting the Theodore War Memorial in an oval in the centre of The Boulevard. The memorial was built as a tribute to all the men and women of Theodore who have served in all wars.
