Comet is a small suburban town located in the local government area of the Central Highlands Regional Council in the state of Queensland. The suburb is considered to be the oldest town in the Emerald district. It was originally known as Cometville before its current name was given, which was derived from the Comet River. On December 29, 1844, Ludwig Leichhardt named the river following his observation of the Comet Wilmot. He then established a “dig tree” to serve as a clue on the whereabouts of his buried journals and food. One of the oldest structure in the suburb is the Comet Post Office, which opened on September 5, 1877.
