A suburb under the Cairns Region local government area of Queensland, Gordonvale is located on the Mulgrave River at the southern end of Cairns and east of the Gillies Range. It used to be a separate town, but urban sprawl and developments led to Gordonvale being classified into the suburban areas of Cairns. European settlement in the area was established by the Alley and Blackwell families in 1877, and the road they built for passing through Trinity Inlet became well-used by packers and miners by 1880. Today, Gordonvale is home to many heritage-listed sites and historical spots, such as the Mulgrave Central Sugar Mill, which has been in operation since 1896, Alley Family Graves and the Mulgrave Settlers Museum. Gordonvale also holds an interesting annual event called The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair, the highlight of which is a race to the peak of Walsh’s Pyramid nearby.
