An outer suburb under the local government area of Litchfield Municipality in Northern Territory, Coolalinga is located 29 kilometres southeast of Darwin, 10 kilometres southeast of Palmerston, 9.2 kilometres northwest of Humpty Doo and 15.6 kilometres northwest of Noonamah. The town’s name was derived from the name of the store and caravan park opened by Len Cant along the Stuart Highway. Today, the town has grown into a major service centre and important commercial area for the rural outer suburbs of the Litchfield Shire. It houses the Coolalinga Shopping Centre, the largest shopping centre in the area, which has a Woolworths supermarket, a post office, liquor and petrol outlets, pharmacy, a number of specialty shops and cafes. Aside from the Woolworths supermarket complex, the suburb also has a new 20,000 square-metre shopping complex called the Coolalinga Shopping Village, which was completed by Darwin-based developer Gwelo in 2013. Coolalinga continues to be a site for urban development and expansion, with residential areas and office spaces expected to bring over new residents to the suburb who are looking to move from Darwin’s central business district.
