Do I need to involve my neighbour if I'm redoing or changing the fence between us?
Yes, in Queensland a dividing fence is owned by both you and your neighbour. If you want to make any changes to your fence you need to propose them in writing to your neighbour. Give them time to seek alternative quotes or suggest changes to the plan—after all, they will usually be paying for half. If, however, the fence you want is more expensive than a ‘standard' fence, you pay the extra.
How tall can my fence be?
What is considered a standard fence can vary from street to street but is usually 900 high – 1800 high. If you’re building a fence over 2 metres tall in your yard, you may need a permit from your local council. Pool fences must be a minimum of 1.2 metres tall, with gate latches no less than 1.5 metres off the ground.
