About Tweed Heads, NSW
Tweed Heads is a town located on the Tweed River in north eastern New South Wales. It is part of the Tweed Shire and sits adjacent to the Twin Town of Coolangatta on the Queensland border minutes drive from Coolangatta Airport. John Oxley discovered the Tweed Valley in 1823 and declared “The scenery here exceeded anything I have previously seen in Australia." Tweed City has commercial and industrial areas supported by local community services including The Tweed Hospital and Centro Tweed. The township has a laid back atmosphere and was and still is a haven for retiree’s. However, due to its proximity to the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads has shared an economy based predominantly on tourism. Embraced by stunning golden beaches, the Tweed River and waterways is an array of water recreation and leisure to indulge in. River cruises, whale watching, kayaking, jet-skiing, fishing and dolphin spotting from the Point Danger Lookout are but a few. Popular with locals and tourists alike is the renowned Twin Towns Services Club, showcasing international acts, quality events such as “Opera on the Beach”, and housing a diverse range of superior dining options. It is one of the areas most celebrated licenced clubs for all ages. The Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club from its humble beginnings in 1926 has grown to become one of Australia’s largest golfing complexes. The renowned Duranbah Beach is popular for surfers owing to its surf break and large swell. Recognised world-wide as having a powerful, high-quality surf break it has been the stage for international surfing events such as the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Tweed Heads has a regional gallery and museum.
