My car was making a noise I informed them it sounded like a pulley, I asked if there was any charge to look at it to determine what was wrong with it (as my car isn't worth much) I was told "there is usually no charge to diagnose it unless it takes hours and hours however we will ring you if it gets to that point". When I went to pick it up they said the alternator needed to be fixed and I was quoted $750 to have it fixed. I said I would leave the repair for now to assess if it's worth having the car repaired. I was then charged for the diagnosis (after they said there was no charge). I was unsure of the diagnosis as it is a relatively new alternator. I took it for a second opinion the new shop diagnosed it in less then 5 mins and didn't charge anything. I have no problem paying for someone's time, however don't tell me there is no charge and then charge me when i go to pick the car up.
