Herbert Valley Hay

We have transitioned out of sugar cane and into hay farming. We have prime land on the outskirts of Ingham, well suited to growing pasture for haymaking. The soil is comprised of a deep silty loam with no underlying clay, which allows water to percolate through and yet can hold moisture for extended periods without rain , at the same time allowing for deep penetration of the pasture roots as well as providing earlier entry of haymaking machinery after rain . We have also incorporated "beds" to shed water off during heavy rain periods so the pasture does not stand in water. The Rhodes Grass variety we have selected is Mariner, which has been specially bred for the wet tropics. It has a higher leaf-to-stem ratio than most other Rhodes varieties. All hay is super conditioned and not baled till average moisture levels are down to 13%. As insurance, a U.S.-developed preservative is incorporated within the bale to prevent any mould from forming while softening the hay and making it more palatable for stock. In addition, all Rhodes grass is fertilised after each cut and is free of any weeds. Finally, all hay. is independently tested. We strive to do the best we can.
