About Graeme James Counselling Psychotherapy & Supervision

When choosing a counsellor or therapist it always helps to know a little about the person you are thinking of consulting to see if they might be a good fit with you. Counselling and therapy are highly relational activities and one of the most important steps in achieving good outcomes is to find a therapist that feels right - someone that you can trust with your story, works towards your goals, is open to your feedback, and works collaboratively with you to help you make sense of your difficulties to improve your wellbeing. Here is a little about me so you can help decide whether working with me might be the right step for you. I teach counselling through University so I am in touch with contemporary research and practice. I also supervise the practice of a wide range of health professionals to ensure their work is accountable to their clients. These professionals include counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, nurses, educators, students and others. Much of my work is the provision of counselling and psychotherapy to adult individuals and couples. These people see me in person in Byron Bay, Bangalow, in Sydney or online via Skype which can be important in rural and regional areas. In the past I have managed Lifeline Sydney and worked with Medibank Health for Beyondblue. I started counselling with an agency way back in 1987 and have been in private practice since 2001 so have come into contact with a great many differing people with diversity of issues over the years. I try to work very gently and collaboratively at my clients pace to help them learn from their experience and the relationship with me. My aim is to help you better manage lifes crises. I help couples to rekindle intimacy and connection by changing their negative interaction cycles; and individuals to manage and grow from experiences of loss, grief, trauma, anxiety and depression. In working towards your goals, we establish a shared understanding of your problems, and how they can be addresses so each session is tailored to your specific needs and circumstances at that time. Each session builds upon the one before so clients can move from being overwhelmed, to understanding and recognising triggers and issues, to exploring options for living and relating better. Over time, my clients report learning to understand themselves, including their strengths, weaknesses and blindspots so they can live more fully, relate more genuinely, and cope with life's difficulties. I am available in Byron Bay, Bangalow, and online via Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, and Telehealth mobile calls. If this sounds like what you are looking for, I would be happy to talk with you in person about your situation and needs. Please call me on 0412 518 024.
