Tuncurry is a coastal town in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales forming part of the Great Lakes region. It lies approximately 308 km’s north east of Sydney and is immediately adjacent to its twin town of Forster, which is the larger of the two towns. Sharing a long history, the towns have always been connected. Before the completion of the current bridge in 1959 there was a punt. The Wallamba River, Wallis Lake and the Tasman Sea bind this small community connected to water. Founded as a village in 1893, it was named Tuncurry, which in the local indigenous language means “plenty of fish”. Fishing and tourism are the current main industries. Boasting a village style atmosphere with plenty of shopping, activities, large open spaces, accommodation for all budgets and excellent surfing make for a wonderful holiday destination. The area is renowned for clear, clean beaches, waterways and inlets and famous for seafood. Blessed with un-crowded rock ledges, top class blue-water game fishing and the jewel in the crown, Wallis Lake, a pristine world-class fish heaven make Tuncurry the dream spot for avid fishermen. The Scenic Platform at Bennetts Head gives a wonderful overall view of Forster-Tuncurry, a spot where locals and tourists often come to view the majestic Humpback Whales migrating from Antartica.
