After completing schooling in Cairns and Malanda, Michael attended the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane where he graduated with Honours and was admitted to practice as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in January 2013. Michael went on to complete his Master of Laws in 2015, the focus of these studies being on human rights, humanitarian law, international criminal law and public international law.
Much of Michael's career to date has been spent working as a criminal law advocate for legal aid organisations, from Cunnamulla to Mornington Island and everywhere in between. This type of work involved appearances in all criminal jurisdictions including Childrens Court, Magistrates Court, District Court and Supreme Court. Michael also spent a period of time employed as a Senior Prosecutor in Mount Isa.
In late 2015, Michael returned to Brisbane, eventually taking a position at a national law firm where he worked in criminal law and occupational discipline matters for union members and members of certain professions. Michael's work here also involved WorkCover litigation, defending domestic violence applications and appellate matters.
Michael returned to Cairns in 2018 where he continues to work in the criminal law field, joining O'Reilly Stevens Lawyers in early 2019.
