    About Toronto, NSW
Toronto is a suburban town located in the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie in the state of New South Wales. In honour of world champion sculler Edward Hanlan who went to Australia in 1884, the suburb was named after the City of Toronto in Canada. It was the original location of the Ebenezer, which was an Aboriginal mission founded in 1829 until its closure in 1841. Today, the suburb has grown into one of the primary centres in the Lake Macquarie region. Toronto's public infrastructure and commercial facilities include three public schools and two private schools, three large-scale supermarkets, several apparel stores and boutiques, a polyclinic and a private hospital. There are also emergency services available in the suburb, including police and ambulance stations.
