About Fraser Coast, QLD
The Fraser Coast region in the Wide Bay - Burnett region of Queensland is approximately 250 km’s north of Brisbane, the state capital. It is centred on the twin cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough and also includes Fraser Island. The Fraser Coast sits within the Great Sandy Biosphere, awarded by UNESCO, it gives worldwide recognition to the regions outstanding natural beauty and diversity. The region is most popularly renowned for Fraser Island. Lying just south of the last of the Great Barrier Reef's coral cays it stretches for 123 km’s and spans 166,000 hectares. The island is composed almost entirely of sand built up from tidal action over more than 700,000 years – the world's oldest recorded dune-building sequence. The island also has expanses of wetland, beaches, cliffs, and freshwater fills more than 40 pristine lakes. It is a habitat for around 350 species of birds and some 25 species of mammals most well known of these, Australia’s, purest dingo breeds. The gateway to Fraser, Hervey Bay is an international tourist destination and one of the best places in the World to get close to the Humpback Whale. Dotted along its busy esplanade with views out to the island are alfresco cafes’, restaurants, shops, piers and a vibrant Marina. The region also encompasses the major city of Maryborough, which offers up diversity, rich history and impressive heritage experiences. Settled in 1847 it is one of Queensland’s oldest cities and was one of the busiest immigration ports in Australia in the 1800’s. The original port is now a heritage precinct with gloriously preserved colonial buildings, riverside parks, outstanding museums, historic pubs, steam trains and river cruises. The Fraser Coast also contains the smaller mining towns of Howard, Torbanlea and Aldershot, and Bauple, home of the Macadamia nut.
