About Dial-A-Doctor

Dial a Doctor is a fully accredited and established after hours doctor service that has been operating since 2010 in Cairns. Our service is at the forefront of after hours care in Australia - providing a high quality and reliable service to those in need. We have a large team of excellent GPs on the road, ready to visit you in your own home. Our after hours doctor service operates in following manner: Patients who are unwell can ring our call centre and book a call. We take calls from everyone - people who have a Medicare or Veterans Affairs Card are bulk billed so the service is free. International tourists are charged a call out fee which can be claimed on travel insurance. Once the call centre receptionists have booked the call it is sent out to our doctor/driver teams on the road. The after hours doctor/driver teams attend the calls. The patient is treated and we offer a range of services. If the patient is in need of any medications we can provide them with a script. The doctor's bags have a supply of common medications so if the chemists are shut or the patient finds it difficult to leave the house the doctors can leave them with a starter pack. The doctors can order blood tests or x-rays. If necessary we can supply patients with a referral to the hospital. Once the consultation has concluded the doctor writes the clinical notes for the consultation. The clinical notes are then forwarded onto the patient's daytime GP so they are kept informed about the treatment we have administered. We pride ourselves on providing a quality service that is of great assistance to the community in the following ways: People who are disabled, elderly or are without transport can have much easier access to primary health care. We greatly help to alleviate strain on Hospital Accident & Emergency departments. Single parents can have their child or themselves attended to after hours without having to take the whole family out of the house.

Some of the doctors have shocking attitudes, especially the German guy, he's got a real attitude and acts like his patients are an annoying inconvenience to him. He definitely picked the wrong profession and it's not fair on the patients having this sent to them, it's not their fault that their sick, plus they're basically paying his wages.

On Saturday March 2 I was experiencing severe stomach pain. About 8:30 pm I phoned Dial-A-Doctor, It wasnt long after thankfully that Dr. Paul and the driver arrived. After a 10 minute examination the Doctor made it clear I was in a serious condition and need to be admitted to Emergency (Cairns Hospital) immediately. A friend drove me, the Emergency Department reacted straightaway on telling them I had been referred by your Doctor. Just after 10pm I was in Triage undergoing tests and by 1am Sunday morning I was undergoing extensive life saving surgery. I can't imagine what could have happened if I had not called you and been examined by undoubtably such an experienced doctor who saw the seriousness of my condition. I had badly twisted bowels, my blood supply was being cut off and to top it off I was on the verge of appendicitis. Thankyou Dr. Paul. Sincerely.

Star rating 0, wish I could go into negative territory! I dialed 'Dial a Doctor' on Saturday 19 January at 2208. I reported that my husband had sever food poisoning with continuous and simultaneous diarrhoea and vomiting. I asked for a doctor to attend and give an anti-nausea injection as my husband was unable to keep down any of the anti-nausea pills I gave him. I was told (by an operator in W.A.) to take him to Emergency at the public hospital in Cairns. I replied that it was not an option to transport a man with continuous diarrhoea and vomiting 17 kilometers to the public hospital in Cairns. I was then told to ring 000 and the operator disconnected. While I understand that Saturday nights are always busy, the off-handed and unhelpful service provided by your operator means that I have tossed your card in the bin and will never again access your service. I will also make sure all my contacts hear of our experience and are aware of the deficiencies in your service.
