About Bundaberg, QLD
Bundaberg may have been founded in 1867, however it wasn’t surveyed, laid out or named until 1870. By 1872, there were roughly 200 people living in the town, taking advantage of the timber work, which the town was established for. In the following years, the timber supplies dried up, making way for corn production, followed by sugar manufacturing, which it is still known for today. Today, Bundaberg rests with a population of more than 93,000 and draws in visitors all year round with stunning scenery, sweet treats and, of course, the chance to get up close and personal with turtles. The Mon Repos Turtle Encounter has been rated one of the top 10 things to do in Bundaberg. Between November and January, mother turtles lay eggs in the Mon Repos Conversation Park, as they have done for thousands of years. Then, in January and March, tickets are available to join the only ranger-guided turtle encounter on the East Coast of Australia, which sees the safe journey of baby turtles to the water. After all that hard work, you’ll be looking for a way to quench your thirst. What better way them a trip to the Bundaberg Rum Distillery or with one of the many Bundaberg Brewed Drinks. Bundaberg Rum, Bundaberg Ginger Beer and other beverages are well known around Australia for the carefully brewed concoctions, all of which you can sample right there in town. By train, the journey from Brisbane to Bundaberg is roughly 4 hours, while you’re looking at around 55 minutes by plane. Once you arrive, you’ll be looking for accommodation, if not pre-booked. However you’re travelling, there are caravan parks, hostels, hotels, motels, motor inns and other places to rest your head all throughout the region.
