    About Maroochydore, QLD
Maroochydore is located about 100 km’s north of Brisbane, an urban centre of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. With Caloundra to the south and Noosa to the north it is blessed with 25 km’s of golden sandy beaches including Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland, Coolum and Maroochydore. The area was named by Andrew Petrie on his 1842 exploration, after an indigenous word meaning “red bill”, the name of the black swans commonly seen in the region. The river-mouth, which is now a kite surfer’s paradise, was once the site of a large timber-mill from where the local lumber was shipped to Brisbane by paddle-steamer. Maroochydore is not only the bustling commercial and central business district of the Sunshine Coast, it is also home to the largest shopping centre, “Sunshine Plaza”, which has a large cinema complex, fashion boutiques, department stores and food courts. The city also offers nightlife, trendy bars and various busy Surf Life Saving Club action. A long walking track runs from Sunshine Plaza to Cotton Tree, through Alexandra Headland, right up to Mooloolaba and is always buzzing with people strolling, jogging or cycling along the waterfront. To wind down, locals and tourists relax on the Maroochy River, a popular holiday spot to enjoy river cruises, great fishing opportunities, and eco life. It is serviced by endless accommodation options including caravan parks and motels to suit families and travellers alike. The town is beautifully balanced by 3722 hectares of municipal reserves and 200 hectares of national parkland.
