A section of the Hugh River flows along the town’s southwestern border. The Arrernte, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the area also owned the lands extending from the Horseshow Bend to the south through the Chambers Pillar, then across to Mount Burrell, Mount Peachy and Mount Frank. The community has a tourist resort called “Gunya Titjikala” that is operated by Gunya Tourism, a general store, an indigenous arts centre, a number of healthcare facilities, a basketball court and mechanical workshop. The Chambers Pillar sandstone formation can be reached around 44 kilometres southwest of Titjikala via four-wheel drive vehicle from the Maryvale turnoff.
