Tiwi is a small suburb in the northern part of Darwin, the capital city of Australia’s Northern Territory. “Tiwi” is an Aboriginal word that has numerous meanings, one of which is “people”. The suburb is also said to be named after the Aboriginal people who reside in the Tiwi Islands. The suburb, which was one of the areas developed after Cyclone Tracy, is located 12 kilometres from the state’s capital city. The streets of Tiwi bear the name of stations in the Northern Territory. Tiwi is the location of Darwin’s only public hospital, the Royal Darwin Hospital. Residents of Tiwi can make their purchases at a local shopping centre. The suburb also has its own primary school and middle school.
