An outer rural locality of the city of Darwin and administered by the local government area of Litchfield Municipality of Northern Territory, Livingstone is located approximately 49 kilometres southeast of Darwin, 16.5 kilometres south of Humpty Doo, 9.8 kilometres east of Berry Springs and 5.7 kilometres south of Noonamah. The town’s name was derived from a war-time 34-mile airstrip that in turn was named after John D. Livingstone, Jr. The town is bordered by the Stuart Highway to its east, which intersects with the Cox Peninsula Road at its northernmost end, also where the main township is located. The locality is serviced by the Living Stone Recreation Reserve, an organisation of volunteers who make sure that the community and its visitors enjoy a range of services and facilities. These include an open hall that can be rented for meetings and events, an oval, a playground, a volleyball court and a picnic area. The recreation reserve also maintains the 34 Mile Bar and Bistro, a permanent and licensed bar and kitchen that serves drinks and home-cooked meals at family-friendly prices.
