Koonawarra is a suburban town located in the local government area of the Wollongong City Council in the state of New South Wales. Previously known as Exmouth, the town’s current name is considered to be derived from an Aboriginal term that means “a high point of land with smooth, round stones.” The town is generally a residential community, with the first sign of settlement dating back to 1816. Koonawarra’s major features include the Eleebana Reserve, Gilba Road Reserve, BMX Park, Hector Harvey Park, Koonawarra Primary School and the Koonawarra Community Centre. Some of the local businesses and services in the suburb are bottle shops, pest control companies, building inspection services, child care centres, electrical contractors, fencing contractors, commercial and industrial cleaning contractors.
