A suburb under the administration of the City of Wollongong local government area of New South Wales, Haywards Bay is situated 4.9 kilometres north of Albion Park, 18.5 kilometres southwest of Wollongong, 50.4 kilometres east of Moss Vale and 101 kilometres South of Sydney. It is bordered by the Princes Highway to the west, Lake Illawarra to the east, the Macquarie Rivulet, which separates it from the suburb of Albion Park Rail, to the south and the suburb of Yallah to the North. The town’s name is said to be derived from Mr. Hayward, a secretary of the smelting works in the area until around 1902. While primarily a residential suburb serviced by a handful of small businesses, Haywards Bay is within close proximity to the Illawarra Regional Airport, as well as several sporting venues and recreational sites in its neighbouring suburbs, such as the AMF Bowling Centre of Albion Park Rail, Oak Flats Olympic Pool and Oak Flats Roller Skating Ring of Oak Flats, and Croom Regional Sporting Complex.
