A coastal town under the Municipality of Kiama local government area and the Illawarra Region of New South Wales, Gerroa is situated 3.6 kilometres south of Gerringong, 13.9 kilometres northeast of Shoalhaven Heads, 15.6 kilometres south of Kiama and 133 kilometres south of Sydney. Prior to European settlement, the nomadic Aboriginal Wodi Wodi people inhabited the land for around 20,000 years. The first Europeans who set foot in the area were believed to be the survivors of the Sydney Cove shipwreck, who passed through the area in 1797. Sitting at the head of the Crooked River estuary and the northern end of the Seven Mile Beach, various religious orders once held their retreat in the original village. Today, the town is frequented by travellers and beach-goers for its proximity to the Seven Mile Beach National Park, which is a popular destination for bird watching, fishing, surfing, hang gliding, paragliding, windsurfing, sailing and surfing. Aside from small shops, accommodations and restaurants, the seaside town also has a golf course and is serviced by a number of bus stops.
