The suburb is predominantly residential with small commercial areas, one of the largest Westfield shopping centres opened in 1965, which houses major retail outlets including Woolworths, K’Mart and Coles. Adjacent to the centre is a park, which encompasses sports facilities, a baby health centre and a small sculpture garden. A community support structure of several schools, a private hospital, health care facilities, a community hall and bowling club exist.
Figtree is also home to the Port Kembla Sailing Club offices.
A district full of green spaces and parks, including Figtree Park, Sid Parish Park and the connected Harry Graham and Roy Johanson Park cater to the locals.
