Woonona is a northern suburb of Wollongong, New South Wales, on the northern area of the Illawarra coastal plain. It is bypassed by the M1 Princes Highway to the east and Memorial Drive to the west.
The district’s history lies in cedar getting and coal mining which brought migrants from England, Wales and Scotland with townships heritage evident by its numerous historic buildings scattered throughout the suburb including the Woonona Post Office, Woonona Infants School, Woonona Industrial Co-operative and the Woonona School of Arts.
Today it is mostly light density residential and the local beaches are popular for fantastic surfing conditions and famous for the “Dorrigo Ave” break.
