Named after a convict ship from the Third Fleet that was the first European vehicle to enter Port Stephens, Salamander Bay is a suburb in the Port Stephens area that is adjacent to the shallow bay. The area is considered to be largely residential and is home to a large shopping centre where locals get most of their goods. Tourists can go boating around the bay or hire fishing charters to take them around. There are also notable restaurants around the area that sell dishes that are made from freshly caught fish. There is a bowling alley along Sandy Point Road for those looking to spend a great night with friends.
