A small village administered by the local government area of Bogan Shire in the Orana region of New South Wales, Girilambone is located approximately 45 kilometres northwest of Nyngan, 159 kilometres southeast of Bourke, 230 kilometres west of Coonamble (through the Coonamble Road and A32), 173 kilometres east of Cobar and 666 kilometres northwest of the state capital of Sydney. The main township sits on the Mitchell Highway, close to where it intersects with the Murrawombie Road leading to the east and Booroomugga Road leading to the west. The town’s name was derived from a local Aboriginal word that means “place of many stars.” Like many towns and villages in the country, Girilambone began as a railway settlement, as its railway station opened in 1884. However, the station was closed in 1986, and its disused buildings and facilities now survive but are in poor condition.
