Wards River is a suburb situated on The Bucketts Way and is under the local government area of the Great Lakes Council. Early settlement of the area of Wards River dates back to 1827, when the Australian Agricultural Company established a sheep and farming outpost there. Although coal mining and timber-getting were attempted, those industries no longer exist in Wards River. Today, the land in Wards River is used for agricultural purposes such as fishing and chicken farming. Wards River is also surrounded by several state forests, including Avon River State Forest, Chichester State Forest and Myall River State Forest. The Glen Nature Reserve lies to the north of Wards River, offering opportunities for various outdoor activities for residents and tourists alike.
