Glenthorne is a town within the local government area of the Greater Taree City Council located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, adjacent to the Manning River and the Pacific Highway. The City of Greater Taree was proclaimed in 1981, joining the areas of the Municipalities of Taree and Wingham and Shire of Manning Valley. The recently opened Cattai Wetlands is near the town of Glenthorne. It is located just off the Pacific Highway and is often called a hidden gem. Its habitat was previously ravaged by the effects of acid sulfate soils and land clearing, but after the council purchased the land in 2003, restoration has been a topmost priority. The wetlands now boast of over 170 different species of kangaroos, wallabies, birds and goannas.
