A town under the Byron Shire Council local government area in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Billinudgel is situated 10.4 kilometres northeast of Mullumbimby, 787 kilometres northeast of Sydney, 145 kilometres southeast of Brisbane and 23 kilometres northwest of Byron Bay. The Pacific Motorway passes through the town’s eastern side and partly forms a boundary with its neighbour suburb Ocean Shores. The town’s name was derived from the Aboriginal Bundjalung word “bilihnadhihl,” which means “once belonged to a parrot.” As with most towns in the Northern Rivers region, the former railway town has boomed and now enjoys a thriving industrial estate with several new businesses and properties. Among its well-known landmarks is the historic Billinudgel Hotel, which has been in operation since 1908 and offers a peek into the pioneering days of the area. Its historic main street, which welcomes visitors into the scenic farming district of The Pocket, is also lined with vibrant stores and shops.
