Ballina is located on the north coast of New South Wales in the Northern Rivers region. It is bypassed by the Pacific Highway and was established on the northern shore of the Richmond River near Cape Byron in the 1840’s. It is approximately 750 km’s north of Sydney and 200 km’s south of Brisbane.
Bordered by the sparkling Pacific Ocean and the lush green hills of the hinterlands and home to the “Big Prawn” Ballina is a popular holiday destination that offers family friendly beaches, stunning National Parks including Broadwater National Park and Bundjalong National Park and a range of shopping and dining experiences.
Sitting on the mouth of the Richmond River and North Creek, Ballina proves a recreational feast, surrounded by headlands and scenic views, locals and tourists can partake in a diverse range of activities, including every water sport imaginable, with great opportunities for Whale and Dolphin spotting. The township also houses a World class skate park and 25 km’s of cycle-ways.
Ballina Naval & Maritime Museum, just behind the Ballina Visitor Information Centre in River Street, is the home of the Las Balsas raft, which completed the historic trans-Pacific expedition in 1973.
