It sits on the northern shoreline of Lake Macquarie, bordered by the Cockle Creek to the east and north, the suburbs of Fassifern, Booragul and Woodrising to the south and the suburbs of Killingworth and Wakefield to the west. The area was first called “Tirelbah” by Europeans in 1831, and was changed to the current spelling two years later.
