The other significant tourism site in Maitland is the Historic Maitland Gaol, a key anchor attraction of the Hunter. The gaol has a history spanning back 150 years when it housed some of the most notorious and hardened criminals. It closed in 1998 and has since become a museum where visitors have the opportunity of experiencing a self-guided tour, or for the brave, torchlight tours by night. The gaol is also burgeoning as a venue for special choice events.
Steeped in immense history the streetscapes of this little township, now a central business district, are lined with heritage buildings. The town hosts an array of stylish boutiques, unique guesthouses, eateries and entertainment venues and has a large main park, the “Maitland Park”.
Whether its taking a walk through the Maitland Regional Gallery, taking in a Heritage Antiques Trail, or exploring the pretty countryside surrounds and wine region it’s obvious that Maitland is a stunning blend of “funky heritage” and contemporary style.
