Hanging Rock began as a pastoral run of about 15,360 acres that could allow the grazing of about 500 head of cattle and was acquired by Nathan Burrows in 1848. It was named after a huge cliff face that towered over the valley below. A gold mining rush in the area was sparked by a stockman whom Burrows spotted panning for gold along Swamp Creek. Today, the community’s main industries are agriculture and tourism. Its main attraction is the Hanging Rock Lookout or simply The Lookout, a scenic vantage point that offers beautiful views of the Nundle Valley.
