A town under the Narrabri Shire local government area in northwestern New South Wales, Gwabegar is situated 75 kilometres northeast of Coonamble, 108 kilometres southwest of Narrabri, 238 kilometres north of Dubbo and 625 kilometres northwest of the state capital of Sydney. The town sits in the middle of the Pilliga State Forest, the largest naturally-forming cypress pine rainforest in the Southern Hemisphere. The township is also surrounded by the Quegobla State Forest and Etoo State Forest to the east. With this, timber used to be the main industry of the town with twelve sawmills operating at the time, and Gwabegar became known as the geographical centre of the timber industries that thrived in the region. Since their closing, farming has become the main source of income in mainly rural Gwabegar.
