A parish and small rural community under the Tenterfield Shire local government area of New South Wales, Drake is situated 44 kilometres east of Tenterfield, 77 kilometres west of Casino, 712 kilometres north of Sydney and 238 kilometres southwest of Brisbane in Queensland.
Drake began as a thriving timber and mining town that was established after gold was discovered near a hill on the western side of the present-day community called Newmans Pinch. The first sale of allotments was conducted in the 1860s, and the Australian Antimony Co. Commenced mining operations in the area, making Drake their community centre. The town grew to have 12 hotels, a town band, several private residences, a blacksmith, a post office and a handful of stores. There was also a weekly coach service that ran from Tenterfield to Casino in 1885.
Today, the town’s main industries are agriculture and timber, with tourism following closely through businesses offering various tourist activities such as hiking, fishing and fossicking.
