Stockton is the only residential suburb in Newcastle surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and surfing beaches to the east, the Hunter River to the south, shipwrecks to the north and marshes to the west. Stockton was formerly called “Pirates Point” due to plenty of escaped convicts being shipwrecked near the area in the 1800s. The wrecks of the Sygna and Adolphe ships are still visible to this day, and reminds the Stocktonians of their suburb’s rich history.
Though Stockton is part of Newcastle, it still retains its charm as a country suburb because it is isolated from the city. Residential areas are lined with old mansions and 19th century cottages, but there are also modern buildings. It is a fisherman’s paradise, as there are plenty of fishes that can be caught from the sea, the river and the harbour. Stockton is famous for fishing facilities. Stockton Beach is also an ideal spot for locals and tourists who love to surf. Holiday resorts are where people from the city flock to get some rest and relaxation without being too far away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
