A suburb under the administration of the City of Lake Macquarie local government area in New South Wales, Mount Hutton is situated 4 kilometres southwest of Charlestown, 14 kilometres west-southwest of Newcastle 49.3 kilometres southeast of Cessnock and 140 kilometres northeast of Sydney. It sits in the eastern area of Lake Macquarie, next to the lakeside suburb of Eleebana. The Newcastle Inner City Bypass, which converges with the Pacific Highway and Hillsborough Road, passes the suburb and serves as its eastern border. An urban yet primarily residential suburb, more homes are currently being constructed in the area, partly due to its proximity to the metropolitan hub of the neighbouring suburb of Charlestown. Aside from a number of restaurants and small businesses, the town also has a shopping centre, a park, a public school and a number of bus stops servicing the area.
