Highfields is a small suburb within the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie located in Newcastle, South Wales. The suburb of Highfields is about 8 kilometres away from Newcastle’s business district. The actual Lake Macquarie is a major tourist attraction in the area. It is a wave-dominated barrier estuary that is connected to the Tasman Bay and covers an area of 110 square kilometres. Highfields is largely a quiet, residential suburb, but the main industries in the area of Lake Macquarie also include coal mining, agriculture and manufacturing industries. The Eraring power station, a coal-fired power station owned by Origin Energy located on the western shore of Lake Macquarie, actually supplies a fourth of New South Wales’ power.
