Gillieston Heights, formerly called East Greta, is a suburb located in the City of Maitland. In the late 1800s, businessmen bought 245 acres of land that surrounded Gillieston Heights. Within a few weeks, they produced coal that was brought to Maitland for selling. Because of the coal business’ success, the East Greta Coal Mining Company was founded in 1891. The coal business grew and soon, the businessmen were providing coal for power companies in Bundaberg, Melbourne and Sydney. In 1929, there was a miners’ strike that caused operations to cease. Although the mines closed, the residences of the miners in the area remained intact.
In 2005, Gillieston Heights had an exponential population increase and as a result, residential areas were developed to accommodate bigger population.
