Garden Suburb is located in the City of Port Macquarie. The area got its name during the time of subdivision. The garden city movement was popular in England. The movement was started by Ebenezer Howard who wanted to form garden cities in rural areas. The idea was to create garden suburbs with no industrial and commercial components that were found in cities. The proposed garden suburbs were supposed to be placed in a rural location that could be accessed by train. Despite fulfilling the conditions of a garden suburb, the area never had a station.

In 1956, a post office named Kotara Heights was opened and in 1964, the area’s name was officially changed to Garden Suburb.
