East Maitland, a suburb of the City of Maitland, is home to a variety of historical buildings that visitors can explore. The suburb consists of wide streets lined with cafes, restaurants, antique stores and plenty of other businesses. East Maitland boasts grand churches that provide an overlooking view of the suburbs.
One of the main attractions of East Maitland is Maitland Gaol. With over 150 years of vibrant history, visitors can see where notorious criminals were housed through themed tours and group sleepovers. The former maximum security prison was built in 1844 and by 1848 it housed several prisoners including Darcy Dugan, David Eastman, Ivan Milat and Neddy Smith. The prison was officially closed on January 31, 1998. Maitland Gaol is listed as one of New South Wales’ Heritage sites.
Known as the “Government Town”, East Maitland was designed in a manner that can accommodate schools, public buildings, churches and public reserves.
