Clarence Town is a small town located by the banks of the Williams River. Timber getters who settled in the area in 1825 through land grants were the first to visit it. A shipbuilding industry was also established, and Clarence Town is where the first ocean-going steamer in Australia was built. Today, the Shipbuilding Plaque can be seen at the southern part of town where the 150th anniversary of the paddle steamer’s launch is commemorated.
Clarence Town is also home to The Good Samaritan Donkey Sanctuary that was founded in 1990. The sanctuary’s goal is to care for donkeys in the area who are mistreated or abandoned.
