Bolton Point sits on a peninsula that extends southward into the western portion of Lake Macquarie. The area of Bolton Point was purchased by John Herring Boughton in 1883, and a number of names were used to refer to the area; among these was Bolton Point, said to be a misnaming for the original Boughton Point. While largely a residential lakeside suburb, Bolton Point has a child care centre, a retirement community, a couple of parks and a state conservation area.
