Beresfield is a north-western suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, approximately 22 km’s from Newcastle’s central business district. Located on a low ridge rising out of the surrounding floodplain and wetlands of the Hunter River, the town is bisected by the New England Highway.
Opened in 1925 the train station is served by New South Wales TrainLinks Hunter line with limited connections.
Once a mining area Beresfield is a quiet community town that has local conveniences including banks, a post office, Safeway supermarket, medical facilities, restaurants and a branch of the Newcastle Regional Library.
A passionate sporting ethos, the suburb houses numerous sporting clubs and facilities, including soccer, rugby league, netball, bowls and golf. Beresfield Girl Guide District is a very active youth organisation in the area, servicing the community by participating in Clean Up Australia Day and various fundraising and charity events.
Most notable to the locality is the Newcastle Memorial Park and Crematorium, one of the largest and most beautiful independently owned memorial spaces in the Hunter region. Originating in the 1930’s as a crematorium it grew to accommodate the needs of locals to include lawn and headstone burial options. It has been designed as a wide, open, light and airy space, a peaceful place set amongst a sprawling natural setting.
