Originally called Tweed Junction, settlers petitioned to change its name to Tumbulgum. This name came from an Aboriginal word that is said to mean “meeting place of the waters” but some also claim that it also means “wild fig tree” or “a large fig” in some translations. Today, Tumbulgum is a historic village that boasts of several buildings that were given the National Heritage classification, some made using the local Red Cedar. Among these is the historic Tumbulgum Hotel, which is also called Tumbulgum Tavern, the first pub and hotel in the area that was licensed in 1887. The town is also a popular fishing town and boating destination.
