A village under the Wingecarribee Shire local government area in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales, Fitzroy Falls is located 16 kilometres south-southeast of Moss Vale, 41 kilometres west of Nowra and 137 kilometres south-southwest of Sydney. The locality was first called Yarrunga and was renamed after the waterfall measuring 81 metres tall that was discovered by Charles Throsby. The waterfall, in turn, was named after Sir Charles Fitzroy, a New South Wales Governor, when he visited the area in 1850. Fitzroy Falls has remained a popular scenic stopover for travellers heading to the Southern Highlands. Activities in the area include bird watching, picnicking and nature walks in Morton National Park, the highlight of which is the lookout at the top of the falls. The tourist area has been provided with substantial parking, catering services, pathways, elevated walkways, visitor centres and boardwalks.
