The town’s name is believed to be a Kamilaroi term for either “rising sun” or “long waterhole.”
Moree was declared as a town in 1862 and land sales followed later in the year. Development continued until Moree became a municipality in 1890, the heritage-listed Federation-style land office was constructed in 1894, and the railway line from Sydney was established in 1897. Today, Moree is recognized as a major agricultural centre known for its contribution to the country’s cotton-growing industry, which began in the early 1960s. The town also attracts visitors with a number of sites within and around it, the highlights of which include a Heritage and Art Deco Guided Walk and the mineral-rich Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre.
