My name is Nigel Unsworth and I'm a practicing visual artist based on the NSW South Coast. My practice is varied including traditional styles of travel, landscape and portrait photography, as well as fine art photography. Transcending form from the realism of traditional photography allows the viewer to engage in the artwork on a different level. My area of research for my PhD explores the aesthetic affinities between photography and cinema and the roles they play in conveying perception and information in contemporary visual culture. My practice-led research investigates how cinematic styling techniques such as lighting, composition and colour can not only influence an aesthetic value in photography but also evoke emotional responses in the viewer through narrativity, artistic expression and image manipulation.
