In the 1990's, Shoalhaven Recycling first began as a basic and novel service to the citizens of the greater Nowra area. Managing director Sandy Wilson saw the increasing need for minimising and eliminating conventional waste and for recognising materials as renewable. In this period, the knowledge and understanding of recycling was just beginning. In the 20+ years since, increasing information about the vital need to reuse our dwindling resources has become apparent. Shoalhaven Recycling has been around since the beginning, and today, we continue to make strides towards a better future for our communities. The way we live today is interrupting the earth’s natural processes. As populations grow and resources deplete, it has become increasingly clear that it is our responsibility as Earth’s residents to use our limited resources wisely. This means reusing what we’ve been given and living as responsible stewards. Recycling is one of the simplest ways to contribute to the health and conservation of our planet, and it’s this process that our organisation is dedicated to. Recycling ensures that materials and resources aren’t discarded to contribute to the already crowded landfills across Australia. Instead, these still very useful and valuable materials can serve our society as they are repurposed into a whole host of items. In the late 1940’s, after returning from War Service, Mr Peter Hart purchased the Pharmacy at 78 Goulburn Street, Crookwell and began trading as Peter Hart Pharmacy. Mr Hart continued to run the Pharmacy for over twenty years until his death in 1970. After his passing, his wife Mrs Alice Hart continued to own and work in the pharmacy, however she required a Pharmacist-in-charge. In 1971, having completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy a year prior, Mr Ken Wicks accepted this opportunity and moved to Crookwell from his home town of Temora, NSW. During this time Mrs Hart also decided to make a subtle change to the name of the Pharmacy, to its current title of Hart’s Pharmacy. Mrs Hart and Ken continued to work under this arrangement until early in 1985 when it came time for Mrs Hart to retire. At this time Ken purchased the business from Mrs Hart, and chose to maintain the current name of Hart’s Pharmacy for two reasons; Ken and his family enjoyed a close relationship with Mrs Hart and her children, and the Hart’s business had formed an important part of Crookwell’s history for over 40 years, and Ken wanted to respect this by honouring and maintaining this name.
