About
Tumut Baptist Church is a group of believers who join together in fellowship, biblical teaching and a belief that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Saviour. Tumut is situated in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. The name Tumut is thought to be derived from a Wiradjuri word 'doomut' or 'doomat', which means either 'camping ground' or 'quiet resting place by the river'. Residents enjoy lovely scenery, tree lined streets and river walks. Annual events include the Festival of the Falling Leaf, Batlow Apple Blossom Festival, Batlow Ciderfest, and the Tumut Rodeo. Tumut enjoys four distinct seasons with a range of activities for each season. In the warmer months, there is bushwalking, mountain bike riding, camping, trout fishing, horse racing, and water sports at nearby Blowering Dam. During winter the nearby snowfields are popular. Other attractions are the Tumut Wetlands, Snowy Hydro Scheme, National Parks, State Forests and the old goldfield at nearby Adelong Falls. The Tumut Region offers a wide range of facilities. There are child care centres, preschools, primary and secondary schooling options, a TAFE college, numerous community education programs and access to nearby universities. There are aged care and disability services and facilities, a new hospital (open in 2022), dental surgeries, and a number of doctors surgeries. There are many community organisations, plus the Montreal Theatre for live performances and films. There are sporting clubs including tennis, bowling, basketball, soccer, hockey, netball and rugby (both league and union). There is also a swimming pool and many parks with playground equipment and BBQs. The building now used by our church was originally slated to be a petrol station but, through the vision and hard work of many people at the Baptist Church, the half completed building was converted to a church. It has been the home of Tumut Baptist Church since 2009.
